At least 11 retailers, including Amazon, have suspended their affiliate programs with Business Insider, the top influencer and digital-publisher e-commerce platform Skimlinks.
Skimlinks spokespersons, who work with publishers such as BuzzFeed, HuffPost, and Hearst, as well as influencers on YouTube and Instagram, confirmed to Business Insider that Amazon’s impressive affiliate program with the platform was closed. (Insider Inc. is an affiliate business partnership with Skimlinks, the parent company of Business Insider.)
Amazon is not the only brand to suspend its program recently.
According to a screenshot seen by Business Insider, Skimlinks sent emails in late March informing its members that a group of brands had suspended their affiliate programs with Skimlinks at 0% commission.
According to a late March email update, here is the list of brands that have suspended their affiliate programs with Skimlinks:
Skimlinks declined to confirm the list of brands but indicated that Ulta and Ralph Lauren had reinstated programs. The company also said that Amazon’s decision to shut down its program had nothing to do with the coronavirus epidemic.
Skimlinks said that 267 merchants, mostly in travel and entertainment, had stopped their shows, with the platform adding 395 new ones from 25 March. The company also stated that overall publishers were driving 43% higher commissions and 45% higher order value on average. Last two weeks vs. two weeks before that.
It is unclear whether the suspensions listed in the email are only with Skimlinks or affect other affiliate programs. But some of these suspensions are widespread.
Another top affiliate platform for the affected, Rewardstyle, has seen programs from some retailers. According to a blog update for members on 24 March by Business Insider, at least 10 brands, including Macy’s, Patagonia and Victoria’s Secret, suspended their affiliate programs with RewardStyle.
Walmart suspended its programs with influential collaborative platforms MagicLinks and Rakuten, which Business Insider learned. The information reported that Walmart and Amazon have suspended affiliate programs with some digital publishers.
Influencers and digital publishers using these affiliate programs earn a commission from the sale through a special link provided by the platform, which leads to third-party online stores. They typically earn between 5 and 20% to an affiliate sale, according to a pro-professional in influential marketing. There are many factors that come into play in percentage.
These program suspensions have come at a time when affiliate revenue was rising as a source of income for some digital creators as the brand pulled back from impact-marketing campaigns due to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus epidemic.
Rewardstyle saw an increase in sales in March and a 30% increase in the number of influential campaigns set up that month to drive e-commerce sales for brand partners. The company said Skimlinks has seen an increase in commissions and sales in recent weeks.
But if retailers continue to cut their schedules then there is a possibility of this danger.
This article has been updated over the past month with information about SkimLink’s overall commissions and sales, and SkimLink’s comments with reference to Business Insider’s parent company’s partnership with Skimlinks.
